Gubbio is renowned for its ceramics production and for the famous Corsa dei Ceri, taking place every year on the 15th of May, when three large wooden “candles”, each one representing a Saint, are carried at considerable speed through the narrow alleyways of Gubbio and up the steep hill upon which Gubbio is located. Upon your arrival you will meet your private guide: the tour will start with the visit of St. Francis’ Church, built on the spot where St. Francis wore his penitential habit received from a friend. The visit continues with the Logge dei Tiratori, to reach then the magnificent Piazza Grande, where you will be able to admire the Palazzo del Podestà and the stunning Palazzo dei Consoli, a highly impressive Gothic-style public building, where to have a breath-taking view over the valley. On a lowland at the foot of Mount Subasio, the hill on which Assisi rises, you’ll first visit the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, built around as a protection of the famous little church of the "Porziuncola", where Saint Francis acknowledged his vocation and founded the Order of the Minor Friars. Then, you’ll reach the centre of Assisi, where you will meet up with an expert local guide who will accompany you on an exciting visit to the civil and religious artistic heritage of the city. Admire the splendid Gothic Basilica dedicated to Saint Chiara (1257), made in pink and white bands, the Renaissance Chiesa Nuova with the elegant Dome and the Roman temple of Minerva, of which the first century façade remains. Discover the fourteenth century Monte Frumentario and finally visit the famous and beautiful St Francis’ Basilica, a UNESCO heritage monument, built with white-rosy stone coming from Mount Subasio. The wonderful frescoed cycles by Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini and Lorenzetti are preserved inside the Basilica. Free time for lunch. In the early afternoon, you’ll move onto Spoleto, an enchanting town overlooking on the ancient Via Flaminia, where you can admire many attractions such as Roman ruins and many Romanesque churches. Dating back to the Roman period is the Theatre, situated close to the Archeological museum and actual location of the famous Spoleto Festival. Walking through the narrow and medieval streets, you’ll reach all the main attraction of this town, such as the Cathedral that, suddenly, appears magnificent and marvelous. The Duomo is a masterpiece of Romanesque art and preserves the beautiful frescoes by Filippo Lippi in the apse and a small chapel painted by Pinturicchio.
